Let's (digital)Paint! - Step1 - Preparation

Hi people, this tutorial is a step by step guide about digital painting for "real" beginners.
In this STEP1: Starting from a simple drawing i will explain how to prepare your works to be ready for digital paint!

It will be awesome to see your results so feel free to send me a sample via message (remember to sign it), with your permission i could even public use some of those in here!

This tutorial was requested by Ian Bourlin (Drakath) as a price of his best answer on the last post on this blog. The drawing used for this tutorial is an original work of Ian Bourlin (Drakath).

Here's what i did in detail

1)Image Size: Be sure to have a high enough Pixel Dimension, the more is high the more natural your lines will feel when you're drawing. Don't go too much wild on this though, the more your dimension is high the slower your pc goes (you need a lot of ram and cpu power to handle very large files). This is tip about Resolution (DPI or PPI): set it to 1! This will drop down the ram required for your file to be handled by Photoshop and it doesn't have any consequence unless you have to use the Type Tool to add writings to your images, if you have to do that just go in there and change it when your drawing it's done!

2) Separate Layers: Always separate your Layers! Even if there's nothing wrong to work only on one layer it's much more easy for you to not be confused or struck if you separate at least your linework from your Background. This will give you the possibility to draw something under or above the lines if you wish and much more to change freely your background. In the next STEPS i will show you what you can really do with separated Layers so it will be much more clear.

2)ITA: Livelli Separati: Separate sempre i vostri Livelli!

3) How to separate drawing from background when it's already too late: Here's what to do when you have your drawings on the background layer (which is the case when you have a scan or a photo of your work for example). In IMG1 : Go to Select > Color Range (this function will select every color you want to select), do one Left Click on the White side of your drawing (the background) and then OK. Now that a lot of stuff in your image has been selected take The Rectangular Marquee Tool, Right Click on the white side of your drawing and then pick the Select Inverse option (as shown in IMG2). At this point you will have your linedrawing selected so press CTRL+X for Cut and then CTRL+V for Paste what you have cut into a new and separated layer (it will happen automatically). If you wish you can set the new layer option to Multiply (IMG3) because it could be the case that the new layer with your linedrawings within could have a little amount of white around your lines, well this will fix that with no consequences for the technique i'm showing to you!

4) Canvas Size: When there's not enough space to continue... add it! Don't be lazy, it's very important to frame a subject in the best possible way, in many cases it's the difference between a great work and a acceptable one. So pick up the Crop Tool (on the left), select the image and then Drag the Frame. Whatever you're leaving out is going to be cut out, the rest will be added to the Canvas! Easy!

Facile!

5) Corrections: If you feel that's the case to correct some anatomy and proportions the first thing you should do is to Create a New Layer by clicking into the small icon down to the right. Now draw a tri dimensional structure of your character (or environment if it's not already tri dimensional) and set up a position or whatever you want to change (watch the video for better understanding), be sure to draw into the new layer, always check! When you're ready to proceed with the actual drawing of the subject (this proportions checking part shouldn't take you more than 10 minutes, if you find it difficult then you have to study more perspective and anatomy!) you may want to keep the correction layer visible to not forget what your changes are, if that's the case then lower it's Opacity from around 5 to 20% so that you can easily draw on top it.

6) Duplicate: Before starting to draw and adjust your original drawing for painting make a copy of the drawing layer! To do that just Right Click on the layer that you want to copy, select Duplicate Layer and then OK.

7) Let's Draw! Now that you have two identical layers get rid of one by Left Clicking on the little Eye to the left of the layer (it just turns on or off the layer visibility - NB you can't do changes inside an non visible layer so you won't end up drawing in the wrong layer like this). The only thing to left is to select your new layer and start to draw! Correct what do you want to correct, add what do you want to add. Don't be afraid of changing stuff around, the more you draw the more you learn about drawing. This is also a "very" simplified technique used in the concept art field ;)

That's it for this STEP1, stay tuned for the STEP2 which will be about colors!
